He was the first of the Eastmans coming to America sailing from Southhampton in April, 1638 on ship "Confidence," His name has been spelled Easman even by members of the same family. He was an indentured servant to a Mr. John Cole, they arrived in Boston Massachusetts on April 24, 1638. He was one of the original settlers at Salisbury in The Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was a planter and a carpenter. He is listed as a commoner on the tax lists of 1650 and 1652 and name appears on most early tax lists. He and his wife were members of the Church of Salisbury and are listed among its congregation in 1687. They had 10 children, 8 boys and 2 girls. All lived to adulthood and had families of their own. From Salisbury the family dispersed; his son Philip went to Ashford, Ct., Joseph settled temporarily in Suffield, Ct., but soon removed to Hadley, Mass.; the third generation, however, settled further north, following up the valley of the Merrimack River, while others settled further south, in Massachusetts, and Connecticut and others in Maine. From these places they scattered over the United States and Canada. Sen. Daniel Webster (via son John), poet Robert Frost (via daughter Sarah), inventor George Eastman (via son Joseph), and photographer Ansel Adams (via son Nathaniel) are descendants.
