GOP VP

I couldn’t care less about Sarah Palin’s gender or experience. I think you’d have to be brain dead to discount the possibility McCain does (care), but I’ll let you draw your own conclusions there. Like many, I don’t know much about Gov. Palin, but what I’ve seen isn’t encouraging:

She’s a global warming denier.

On gay rights and marriage:

Palin said she’s not out to judge anyone and has good friends who are gay, but that she supported the 1998 constitutional amendment (banning gay marriage).

Elected officials can’t defy the court when it comes to how rights are applied, she said, but she would support a ballot question that would deny benefits to homosexual couples.

On abortion:

In 2002, when she was running for lieutenant governor, Palin sent an e-mail to the anti-abortion Alaska Right to Life Board saying she was as “pro-life as any candidate can be” and has “adamantly supported our cause since I first understood, as a child, the atrocity of abortion.”

I’ve read in places that she’s opposed to abortion in cases of rape or incest, but I haven’t been able to find a quote directly attributed to her. I’d be interested to hear if this is true.

She’s a member of the NRA. Granted, there are a lot of folks who belong to the NRA, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. Heck, my father was once a member – but he saw the light.

She supports discussing creationism in public schools.

She may be a very capable governor of Alaska. Setting aside the hints at a scandal involving her brother-in-law, I’ve read she has reputation for fighting against corruption in her state. And Alaska REALLY needed that kind of leadership… considering Alaska politics are dirtier that a duck wading in that infamous sound.

So no, my problem isn’t her resumé. She may be a capable manager of the executive branch of government. She may be smart, engaging, and an overall good person… admirable even. Executive experience isn’t in my presidential wish list top five. My problems is she’s my political polar opposite: an extremely conservative Republican. McCain’s supposed appeal is that he’s a moderate maverick, the last six years not withstanding. How exactly does this choice prove that?

If you’re a political moderate or a Clinton Democrat, how could you possibly consider McCain/Palin? Short of believing Obama is the Anti-Christ (in which case you really should consider going back on your meds), how could you live with yourself?
