Civil War?

The President’s words were heard on the radio this afternoon. Discussing the possibility that Iraq had fallen into “Civil War,” the President said (not his exact words, but as close as I recall), “I’ve talked to a lot of people… and the people I’ve talked to all want a united Iraqi government.” And you know what? I have no doubt that’s true.

Forget me not

I have a well deserved reputation of forgetfulness. I walk around the office (at work) with a PDA close enough to be a Siamese Twin (and a better looking one at that). This sets the stage for a conversation I had with my wife this morning. As I was getting out of my car for the Monday Morning Death March to work, my cell phone rang. It was Cheryl calling to tell me that I had forgotten the check…

The Executive versus the Courts

If you read nothing else of this politically slanted entry, please read at least one line. I feel really strongly about it. Read it and go on with the rest of your life with my blessings. Don’t listen to conservative pundits who insist the judiciary is overstepping it’s bounds… reigning in the possible excesses of another branch of government is by design, right smack in the…

Tween time

I am stuck in that moment between getting home late and the time when you feel like going to bed. We decided to go to a Devil Rays away game this evening, and we’re just getting back. They were at Tropicana Field, where they occasionally play home games, so we didn’t have to travel too far. Tonight’s benefactor of the ice cold Rays’ bats were the Indians from Cleveland; and…

Lost in shadow

I saw a newish Caddy yesterday when I was driving home with Adam from Meh-may’s house (insert standard French disclaimer here). It was one of those STS jobs that’s all the rage these days. It had a silver hood, chrome grill… and no bumper. I thought to myself, “that’s a damn shame, wasting a perfectly good Caddy like that.” As we drew closer and passed each…

A new word for the new year

I’ve got a New Year’s Resolution that can’t wait for the New Year. I’m positively giddy with anticipation. I resolve to make the word “rhinorrhea” part of my regular vocabulary. I’m not convinced it’s a real word (it’s just too good to be true), but that hasn’t stopped me before and it isn’t going to stop me now. I can’t wait…

The drip heard round the house

Families with school age children live in perpetual fear of a runny nose. One day your child comes home with twin glowing stripes running from nose to lip, the next your house resembles a scene from a bio-medical thriller. People lay around the house listless in their extended wear PJs with the remnants of a box of Kleenex scattered around a nearby trash can like an electron cloud. Last night Adam…

Abandonment

Monday marked yet another first day. This time it was Adam’s turn. Adam was at a day care center for the first time Monday morning. If you’re unfamiliar with having children and using day care centers… the first day is often one of the first times you feel like a failure as a parent. He cried when Cheryl dropped him off, he was playing when she picked him up, and he seemed…

A seven day void

I seem to have misplaced last week. I had it right here, but I don’t know what I did with it. Upon further review, it may be more accurate to say it was taken from me. First there was the start of the new school year, which was good for two and a half days. Then there was court coverage, which was good for a couple more days. Throw in a thrown out back to cover the weekend and I find myself…

Foul!

“John! You cut me off!” The set up: Cheryl and I are side by side at the medicine cabinet. I am on the right, Cheryl to the left. We reach for the Costco size bottle of anti-histamine (approximately a 36 month supply) at around the same time. My hand reaches the bottle first, prompting Cheryl’s accusation of foul play. My conclusion: Because we were both standing in front of the…
